How to create a WhatsApp QR code

    1. Enter your WhatsApp numberUse the full international format with the country code, for example +44 7700 900123. Spaces and dashes are fine.
    2. Write a pre-filled message (optional)For example "Hi! I'd like to order…". Customers can edit it before sending.
    3. Design itUse WhatsApp green (#25D366) as the frame color, or match your brand.
    4. Download and testScan it with your phone: WhatsApp should open a chat with your number.

How a WhatsApp QR code works

WhatsApp offers official "click to chat" links in the form https://wa.me/447700900123. Add ?text= and a message, and WhatsApp fills in the text box. This generator builds that link for you, removing the plus sign, spaces and brackets that would break it — and turns it into a QR code.

Because it is an ordinary link, the code works with the camera app on any phone. If WhatsApp is installed, the chat opens directly; if not, the person sees a page that offers to download WhatsApp or open WhatsApp Web.

    Ideas for using it

    • Shops and takeaways: "Scan to order on WhatsApp" on flyers, windows and packaging.
    • Customer support: on receipts, invoices and product inserts.
    • Real estate and car sales: on signs, so buyers can ask about this exact property or car. Put the listing number in the pre-filled message.
    • Events and clubs: let people message the organiser to join a group.
    • Personal: on a business card next to your vCard QR code.

Tips for a better WhatsApp code

    • Always include the country code. Without it WhatsApp cannot tell which country the number belongs to and shows "invalid phone number".
    • Use a WhatsApp Business account for your company number. You can set an automatic greeting and away message so scanners get an instant reply.
    • Keep the pre-filled message short. Every character makes the QR code denser. One sentence is ideal, e.g. "Hi, I saw your sign at the market".
    • Use a different message per location to see where people found you: "Hi (flyer)", "Hi (shop window)".

    Privacy note

Your phone number is visible to anyone who scans the code, which is the point. Only use a number you are happy to share publicly. The code is generated in your browser and we never store numbers or messages.

WhatsApp Business: set it up before printing

If you use the code for your business, a few minutes in WhatsApp Business make every scan count:

    1. Greeting message: an automatic reply to new chats ("Thanks for messaging! We reply within 1 hour").
    2. Away message: an automatic reply outside your opening hours.
    3. Quick replies: saved answers for common questions (prices, opening hours, address).
    4. Catalog: products customers can browse without leaving the chat.
    5. Labels: mark chats as "New order", "Paid" or "Delivered".

    Ideas by business type

    BusinessPre-filled message
Restaurant takeaway"Hi, I'd like to order for pickup at…"
Real estate sign"Hi, I'm interested in the house on Oak Street (ref 1042)"
    Repair shop"Hi, I need a quote for…"
Hotel room card"Hi, this is room 214. Could we…"
Tutor or coach"Hi, I'd like to book a free first lesson"

    Troubleshooting

"The phone number shared via url is invalid." Add the country code and check the number is registered on WhatsApp.

The message arrives without text. Some older WhatsApp versions ignore pre-filled text. The chat still opens, so it works either way.

People message the wrong number. Test the code from a phone that isn't yours. A missing digit is easy to overlook.

    Safety

Only put a number on public posters if you're happy to receive messages from strangers. A separate business number keeps your personal number private.

    Frequently asked questions

Do I need WhatsApp Business to make a QR code?

No. The code works with a normal WhatsApp or a WhatsApp Business number. Business accounts add useful extras like automatic greeting messages.

Why does WhatsApp say the phone number is invalid?

The number is probably missing its country code, or the number is not registered on WhatsApp. Enter it as +[country code][number], for example +91 98765 43210.

Can the person change the pre-filled message?

Yes. The message is only placed in the text box; they can edit it or delete it before pressing send.

Can I make a QR code for a WhatsApp group?

Yes. In the group, tap the name → Invite via link → copy the link, then paste it in the URL QR code generator.

    Does the code expire?

No. It is a static wa.me link inside the code, so it works for as long as your number is on WhatsApp.

Is there a limit on how many people can scan it?

No limits at all. Scan counts are not tracked and nothing passes through our servers.
