How to create an SMS QR code

    1. Enter the phone numberUse international format (+1, +44, +91…) so the code works for visitors from other countries too.
    2. Add the messageFor example a keyword like JOIN, a code like WIN2026 or "Please call me back".
    3. Choose a design and frame"TEXT US" or "TEXT TO WIN" makes the action clear.
    4. Test on iPhone and AndroidBoth should open Messages with the number and text filled in.

    How SMS QR codes work

The code contains the text SMSTO:+15550100199:JOIN. This format is understood by the camera app on iPhone and Android and by Google Lens: the phone opens a new text message to that number with the message pre-filled. The user still has to press Send: phones never send a text automatically.

    • Text-to-join lists: "Text JOIN to subscribe to offers". Combine with an SMS marketing service that handles keywords.
    • Contests and voting: at events, TV studios and festivals: "Text A to vote for Team A".
    • Call-back requests: on real-estate boards or service vans: "Text CALL ME and we'll ring you".
    • Appointment confirmations: at clinics and salons.
    • Parking and charity donations: where a keyword triggers an action.

    Tips

    1. Use a dedicated number or short code from your SMS provider, so replies are handled automatically.
    2. Mention costs if any. If your keyword triggers a paid service, say so next to the code. It builds trust and is required in many countries.
    3. Keep the message short: one word or a short phrase keeps the code small and quick to scan.
    4. Tell people what they'll get: "Text JOIN for 10% off your next visit".

    Compliance basics for SMS marketing

If you use an SMS code to collect phone numbers for marketing, the person texting you is giving consent, but most countries still require that you explain what they're signing up for. Next to the code, state the purpose ("weekly offers"), the expected frequency, and how to stop (usually by replying STOP). In the US this is covered by the TCPA and carrier rules, in the UK and EU by PECR and GDPR. Keep a record of when each person opted in. A clear, honest message also gets more sign-ups: people are more willing to text a keyword when they know exactly what will happen next.

Your number and message are processed in your browser only; we never see or store them.

    Troubleshooting

The message app opens without the text. A few older Android messaging apps ignore pre-filled text. The number is still filled in, so people can type the keyword themselves. Print the keyword next to the code ("Text JOIN to 12345") as a fallback.

Nothing happens on a tablet. Tablets without a SIM card can't send texts. Your audience will almost always use phones, but keep it in mind for kiosks.

International numbers fail. Use the full international format with + and the country code. Short codes (4–6 digits) only work inside their own country.

SMS codes for appointments and services

    • Clinics and salons: "Text YES to confirm your appointment" on the appointment card.
    • Car parks and charging stations: a code that pre-fills the bay number, so the operator knows where the customer is.
    • Charities: "Text GIVE to donate" with the amount handled by your SMS donation provider.
    • Tradespeople: "Text QUOTE and we'll call you back" on vans and yard signs.

Make the keyword unique per placement

Use a different keyword on each poster or flyer (JOIN1, JOIN2) to see which placement brings the most sign-ups in your SMS platform's reports. With the bulk generator set to "Text, used exactly as written", you can create the full set of SMSTO codes from a list.

    Frequently asked questions

Does scanning the code send the text automatically?

No. The Messages app opens with the number and text filled in; the person must tap Send. This is a security feature of all phones.

    Does it work on iPhone?

Yes. iPhones read the SMSTO format from the Camera app and open Messages.

Can I leave the message empty?

Yes. Then the code simply opens a new text to your number.

Will people be charged for sending the text?

Normal SMS rates from their mobile plan apply, unless your number is a premium short code, in which case you must tell people the cost.

Can I use a short code like 12345?

Yes. Enter the short code in the phone number field. Short codes only work in the country where they are registered.

Does the SMS QR code expire?

No. The number and message are stored in the code permanently.
