How to create a vCard QR code
- Fill in your detailsOnly the fields you fill in are included. Name or company is required; everything else is optional.
- Keep it shortEvery extra field makes the code denser. Skip the note and address if you print the code small.
- Style itAdd your logo and brand colors. Error correction switches to H automatically.
- Test on two phonesScan with an iPhone and an Android phone, then tap "Create new contact" to check every field.
What is a vCard QR code?
A vCard (file extension .vcf) is the standard format phones use to exchange contacts. A vCard QR code simply contains that text:
BEGIN:VCARD, VERSION:3.0, N:Doe;Jane, TEL;TYPE=CELL:+15550100199 … END:VCARD
When someone scans it, their phone shows a contact preview with a Create new contact or Save button. Nothing is typed by hand, so there are no misspelled email addresses or wrong digits.
We use vCard version 3.0 because it is read by the camera on iPhone and Android, Google Lens and practically every scanner app. Commas, semicolons and line breaks inside your text are escaped correctly so a company name like "Smith, Jones & Co." doesn't break the card.
Where to use your contact QR code
- Business cards: on the back of the card, so contacts are saved before the card is lost.
- Email signatures and slides: at the end of a talk, show your vCard on the last slide.
- Name badges and trade-show booths: collect leads faster than swapping cards.
- Real estate signs, van livery and shop windows: anywhere people want to "save this number for later".
How much information can you include?
A vCard QR code can technically hold more than 1,000 characters, but the more data you add, the smaller each dot becomes. For a code printed 2–3 cm wide on a business card, aim for: name, one or two phone numbers, email, company and website. That keeps the code easy to scan. If you want to share much more (photo, social links, portfolio), put a link to a page with all your details in a URL QR code instead.
| Fields | Approx. characters | Suggested min. print size |
|---|---|---|
| Name + phone + email | 110 | 2 cm (0.8 in) |
| + company, title, website | 200 | 2.5 cm (1 in) |
| + full address and note | 320 | 3.5 cm (1.4 in) |
Your details stay private
The vCard is built by JavaScript in your browser. We do not collect, store or see your contact information, and there is no account where it could leak from.
Troubleshooting vCard codes
The contact is saved without a name. Fill in at least the first or last name. If only the company is set, some phones show the contact as "No name".
Phone numbers don't work abroad. Enter numbers in international format (+1, +44, +91…). We convert them to a clean format automatically.
Accented names look wrong. Codes made here store text as UTF-8, which modern phones read correctly. If an old scanner app shows garbled letters, the phone camera or Google Lens will show them properly.
The code is too dense. Remove the note and the address, or switch error correction to M if you aren't using a logo.
Contacts in bulk
For a whole team, conference speakers or sales staff, use the bulk generator: choose Each row is: a contact and upload a spreadsheet with columns like first, last, phone, email and company. You get one vCard code per person in a ZIP, or printed directly onto Avery labels for badges.
vCard and privacy
The details are inside the code, so anyone who scans it can see them. Only include information you are happy to share with everyone who sees the printed card. We don't store or see your details: the code is created in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
Do vCard QR codes work on iPhone?
Yes. The iPhone Camera app recognizes vCard 3.0 codes and offers to add the contact. Android phones (camera or Google Lens) do the same.
Can I add a profile photo?
Photos are far too large for a QR code. Add a website link instead, where people can see your photo and portfolio.
Can I change my details after printing?
No, the details are stored inside the code. If they change, generate a new code, or use a URL QR code that points to an online profile you can edit.
What is the difference between vCard and MeCard?
MeCard is an older, shorter format created for Japanese phones. vCard is the international standard and supports more fields, so we use vCard.
Why is my vCard QR code so dense?
Every field adds characters. Remove the note or address, or print the code larger. Our size calculator tells you the minimum size.
Does the contact QR code expire?
Never. It is a static code with no link to any server.
